The 73-year-old BJD president made a departure from the usual practice of holding the swearing-in ceremony at the Raj Bhavan. He took oath in an open ground in the presence of hundreds of BJD workers, prominent personalities from business and other fields and leaders from across the political spectrum. Governor Ganeshi Lal administered the oath of office and secrecy to Patnaik .
